Column: Student Forum, All Student Tailgate coming this week
This week is important. Homecoming is about this university’s great spirit, rooted in our common bond as members of the Big Blue Nation and our love of the Commonwealth. Student Government is doing its part to contribute.
We helped with “See Boo!” Tuesday, on Wednesday we are having our annual fall forum, and on Saturday we will be sponsoring an unprecedented All-Student Tailgate before the game. The student forum is a great way for students to connect with the administration and have their voices heard on a number of issues.
This year’s theme, “New and Improved,” focuses on the exciting renovations and plans for campus. President Eli Capilouto, Provost Christine Riordan, and Robert Mock, vice president for student affairs, will be there to present their vision for the university and answer students’ questions. Not only will attendees gain an overview of what campus will look like in the coming years, but also what these changes mean for them.
What does this mean for the Greek Community? Will student fees change? What about the relationship with the city of Lexington? All will be covered.
The event runs from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Student Center Grand Ballroom.
On Saturday, SG is doing something new — we will be holding our first ever all-student tailgate. As the name implies, all students are welcome to enjoy this game day event, starting two hours prior to kick-off at the Johnson Center fields.
There will be free food, T-shirts, corn hole, football and more. It will be an alcohol-free event.
While we think tailgating has gone fairly well this year, one of the concerns we have heard from students was that you had to be in an organization to participate. This is our response: providing a place for anyone to come with their friends and become an active part of the UK community.
Homecoming is a time when every organization puts their best foot forward to contribute to the university. I encourage you to do everything you can this week to support your classmates, friends and neighbors as we continue to build this community.
